Machine Installation & Maintenance for Nottingham Trams
We have recently completed an extensive contract to replace all card reading machines on the stations and platforms for the Nottingham City Transport tram network. The upgrade of the equipment to contactless operation was undertaken on behalf of Init Group.
Despite the poor weather, we managed to complete the project, working daytimes only, within three weeks, when the original contract stipulated a maximum of two months. This meant less disruption for both the operators and passengers.
Nottingham trams operate across a network comprising 32km / 20 miles of track. Each tram can carry the equivalent of nearly three double-decker buses or 170 cars. There are 50 stations and over 5,000 free car parking spaces adjacent to the seven park and ride sites making access easy. The system carries almost 19 million passengers per annum.
The new platform validators enable contactless payment, whereby passengers simply tap their debit / credit card, mobile phone, smart watch or similar on the validators before boarding their tram. There is no need to tap again when they get off and continue their journey.
The system automatically calculates the best fare for the day’s travel, considering all the journeys made during a day. A single payment is deducted at the end of each day ensuring they pay the best price for their travel. The system will soon also integrate with Nottingham buses, again allowing a one-off deduction per day.
We have also been responsible for the maintenance of the ticketing machines on behalf of Init for a six-month period. Customers report a problem by pressing a button on the equipment, which sends an email to Init and to ourselves. We provide a rapid response, needing to be on site and effecting the repair within four hours at the maximum. This is another demonstration of both our versatility and our speed of delivery.
