Two Weeks Turn to Seven Months

Helping in Hamburg Turns to Long-Term Contract

What started out as a quick trip to Hamburg to assist with a contract to instal a new ticketing system, the INIT COPILOTpc3, to a fleet of buses, ultimately turned into a long-term contract, which we completed just before the end of last year. The fleet comprises of over 700 metro, express, sprinter and regional buses. R&R joined two other teams and completed around a quarter of the vehicle upgrades.

Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV) is the second-largest public transport company in Northern Germany. A long-term benefit of the coordinated forms of transport, which include bus, rail, in various forms including elevated railway lines, and ferry travel is for one ticket to operate across the whole city and surrounding areas.

The public transport provider serves the Hamburg Metropolitan Region from Wedel in the west of Hamburg to Lauenburg in the south east. The company has utilised INIT’s integrated solution for its information infrastructure and mobility management since 2017.

The Hamburg Card is valid for all means of transport. It applies to as many journeys as the passenger wishes across Hamburg and all surcharges are already included.  The Card also has the advantage that it is generally valid between 0:00 am until 6:00 am the following day. It is more than just a transport ticket because, in addition to free travel on buses, trains and ferries, it offers discounts on city and harbour tours and reduced admission to sights and museums, theatres and musicals plus restaurants and cafés.

The new ticketing system was the full package, including GPS transmission, communications and ticketing. Factory quality fitment meant that a high standard of work was required and specific equipment had to be purchased to undertake the installation. Once again, we were able to fulfil our part of the contract quickly and effectively.
